Stanford Graduate School of Business shares the first rank along with the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School in the U.S. News 2021 Best Business Schools.

U.S. News sought information about 477 MBA programs accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business International (AACSB) in fall 2019 and early 2020. Out of a total of 364 responses, 131 schools were ranked as they provided the required data on their full-time MBA program and that of the 2019 graduating class.

Stanford GSB, Wharton share top rank in U.S. News Best Business Schools 2021

The Top 10 Rankings

With no school qualifying for the second place, Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management and the University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business have tied for third place. Again, with no claimant for the fourth spot, MIT Sloan School of Management was placed 5th.

However, the biggest surprise was the continuing slide of Harvard Business School to the 6th rank, its lowest since 1996. Just two years ago, HBS was ranked number one. Last year, it was forced to share third place with MIT Sloan and Chicago Booth.

University of California’s Berkeley Haas occupies the 7th rank, followed by Columbia 8th, Yale 9th and NYU Stern in the 10th place.

Compared to the previous year, the current rankings display a reshuffling among the top ten. While NYU Stern moved up two spots to rank 10, Duke Fuqua and Michigan Ross fell and tied for the 12th rank.

Kellogg climbed three places to tie with Chicago Booth for the third rank. However, MIT Sloan and Columbia Business School dropped two places to rank 5th and 8th, respectively. Altogether, seven of the top 10 underwent a change in rank this time.

Top Schools Performance Statistics

Stanford recorded an overall score of 100. It has an acceptance rate of 6.9%, the lowest among the top ten. Its average GPA is 3.7, average GMAT 734, average salary & bonus $168,226 and job rate 89%. Wharton has an overall score of 100, acceptance rate 23.1%, average GPA 3.6, average GMAT 732, average salary & bonus $172,016 and job rate 94%.

Kellogg’s overall score is 99, acceptance rate 27.0%, average GPA 3.6, average GMAT 730, average salary & bonus $163,752 and job rate 96%.

Chicago Booth has an overall score of 99, acceptance rate 24.2%, average GPA 3.6, average GPA 3.6, average GMAT 730, average salary & bonus 164,607 and job rate 95%.

MIT Sloan has an overall score of 97, acceptance rate 14.6%, average GPA 3.6, average GMAT 727, average salary & bonus $160,291 and job rate 94%. Harvard has an overall score of 96, acceptance rate 11.5%, average GPA 3.7, average GMAT 728, average salary & bonus $164,872 and job rate 89%.

Among the top 25 schools, Vanderbilt University’s Owen School of Management climbed the most, rising six spots to finish in 23rd place. The University of Florida’s Warrington School slipped out of the top 25, losing its rank of 25 last year, to a rank of 28th.

Ranking Methodology

In ranking methodology Quality Assessment (weighted by 0.40), the Peer assessment score was 0.25. In fall 2019, business school deans and directors of accredited MBA programs were asked to rate programs on a scale of 1 (marginal) to 5 (outstanding). Those individuals who did not know enough about a school to evaluate it fairly were asked to mark “don’t know.” U.S. News said 46% of those surveyed responded.

A school’s score is the average of all the respondents who rated it. Responses of “don’t know” counted neither for nor against a school.

In the Recruiter assessment score (0.15), corporate recruiters and company contacts were asked to rate all full-time programs on a scale from 1 (marginal) to 5 (outstanding). Those individuals who did not know enough about a school to evaluate it fairly were asked to mark “don’t know.”

U.S. News collected both the peer assessment and recruiter assessment score data. Placement Success (weighted by 0.35) was evaluated on the basis of MBA CSEA Standards for Reporting Employment Statistics, including starting base salaries, signing bonuses, and what proportion of MBA graduates have jobs at graduation and three months after.

Mean starting salary and bonus (0.14): This is the average starting salary and a bonus of 2019 graduates of a full-time MBA program. Salary figures are based on the number of graduates who reported data. The mean signing bonus is weighted by the proportion of those graduates who reported a bonus because not everyone who reported a base salary figure reported a signing bonus.

Employment rates for full-time MBA program graduates: This is the employment rate for 2019 graduates of a full-time MBA program. Those not seeking jobs or for whom no job-seeking information is available are excluded.

For the third consecutive year, MBA programs that reported that less than 50% of their full-time fall 2019 entering students submitted average GMAT scores and average GRE quantitative, verbal and analytical scores received less credit for those test scores in the rankings.

In Overall Rank, data was standardized so that each school’s value was compared with the mean and standard deviations of all other schools, and standardized scores were weighted, totaled and rescaled so that the top school received 100; others received their percentage of the top score. Graduate business programs were then numerically ranked in descending order based on their scores.

To be included in the full-time MBA rankings, a program had to have 20 or more of its 2019 full-time MBA graduates seeking employment.

For a school to have its employment data considered in the ranking model, at least 50% of its total 2019 full-time MBA graduates needed to be seeking work.

The Indian Institute of Management Bangalore and XLRI Xavier School of Management are among the 30 global institutes listed in the First Positive Impact Rating 2020 of Business Schools.

IIMB is in the Level 4 list of 9 Transforming Schools and XLRI in Level 3 among 21 Progressing schools.

IIM Bangalore, XLRI in the 1st Positive Impact Ranking 2020 of B-Schools

The need for Positive Impact Rating

The main focus of Business Schools, for long, was to help students develop into competent managers with the ability to take up senior roles in business organizations, maximize profits and thus keep the shareholders happy.

However, of late, creating a positive impact on the society and promotion of sustainable business practices have assumed greater importance among MBA aspirants and corporate firms. Several of the business schools have also moved towards introducing such courses promoting corporate social responsibility (CSR) and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

It is in this context that the first edition of the Positive Impact Rating 2020 of business schools was released during the World Economic Forum (WEF) conference that took place from January 21-24 at Davos, Switzerland.

Positive Impact Rating as a Tool for Students

Positive Impact Rating (PIR) is in support of a fundamental change in the business school landscape with regards to the schools’ societal responsibility and impact. It offers students a tool to select an education that prepares them as responsible citizens and change-makers in the 21st-century.

It is conducted by the students and for the students. This is the first time that students around the world assessed their business schools on how they perceive their positive impact in the world.

Rating to Foster Collaboration

Rather than creating a competitive ranking, the purpose is to enable learning at and across schools. A rating offers the safety of groups rather than individual ranks and intends to foster collaboration.

Schools, therefore, are positioned in five different levels, in alphabetical order. Students and the management of each participating school receive free online access to a dashboard featuring their school’s results across the different areas in comparison with the average of all schools.

This allows them to actively work towards increasing their positive impact. Some students have reported that meetings are already scheduled with the school management.

The Rating was released in the presence of stakeholders including students, business and societal representatives and business school representatives.

The impact of business schools is measured in three areas (energizing, educating, and engaging) which are further divided into seven dimensions. These dimensions include assessing the programs offered and the learning methods used, and how students actively engage.

It assesses a school’s culture and governance, which are predictors for becoming a positive impact school. And it looks at how members of the school are seen to engage in public as well as how the school is seen as serving as a role model in the eyes of students.

How the Schools Performed

International student organizations reached out to students at the top 50 schools in the Financial Times Masters in Management 2018 ranking (FT) and the top 50 schools in the Corporate Knights Green MBA ranking (CK). A total of 51 business schools participated in the rating.

The Positive Impact Rating features 30 leading schools that have performed well in this student rating. While no school made the top level 5, nine schools are featured in level 4. These “transforming schools” show a positive impact culture, embedded in governance and systems, with visible results in a number of impact dimensions.

Another 21 schools feature in level 3. These “progressing schools” show results across some impact dimensions. In the spirit of reinforcing good practice, the rating does not feature schools that were rated below level 3.

The nine transforming schools at level 4 are rated significantly better in the impact dimensions governance (23% higher) and culture (18% higher) than the rest of the schools, showing the importance of these dimensions in the change process.

Among the 51 participating schools, 26 appear in the FT and 19 in the CK rankings. Among the leading 30 schools, there are 13 FT and 11 CK schools. However, there are no top 25 FT schools among the level 4 schools, while it includes three top 10 CK schools. The FT and CK rankings measure quality differently, with the “green” CK ranking a notch closer to measuring impact.

The international student organizations Oikos, AIESEC, and Net Impact have joined forces with WWF Switzerland, OXFAM International and UN Global Compact Switzerland to launch this radically new business school rating. Together, these stakeholders represent the environment, society, business, and the next generation.

CEIBS topped the Bloomberg Businessweek Asia-Pacific B-Schools Ranking 2019-20 while Indian Business School (ISB) marked its debut capturing not only the 4th rank but also standing first in learning and networking.

This year, Bloomberg Businessweek decided to publish its business school rankings by region instead of bringing out a global ranking which it did for the first time in 2018. It has released separate ranking lists for Europe, Asia-Pacific, Canada and the US.

Overall, the ranking survey covered 131 business schools around the world. The ranking was on the basis of data collected from more than 9,000 students, 14,920 alumni and 2,860 corporate recruiters besides compensation and job-placement data from each school.

The Asia-Pacific Ranking has listed a total of seven schools evaluated on the basis of four parameters, namely, Compensation, Learning, Networking and Entrepreneurship.

Bloomberg Businessweek Asia-Pacific B-Schools Ranking 2019-20

Bloomberg Businessweek B-school Ranking Methodology

Based on more than 26,804 surveys of MBA students, alumni, and recruiters, as well as employment data provided by schools four indexes, Compensation, Learning, Networking, and Entrepreneurship, were created.

The data was collected in 2019 to help prospective students make better decisions about schools they might attend in 2020. To better reflect that dynamic, the naming convention was changed to ranking for the Best B-Schools 2019-2020.

Bloomberg Businessweek said regional pages for Europe, Asia, and Canada, in addition to the U.S., allows for a more detailed intra-regional index ranking. At the same time, prospective students are provided the opportunity to explore differences among schools in all regions.

The Compensation Index has a weight of 37.3%, Networking Index 25.7%, Learning Index 21.3% and Entrepreneurship Index 15.7%.

On compensation, various factors including the pay right after graduation, alumni earnings, percentage of students employed three months after graduation, percentage of a class receiving a signing bonus and size of bonuses were evaluated.

In Networking, the focus was on the quality of networks being built by classmates; students’ interactions with alumni; successes of the career-services office; quality and breadth of alumni-to-alumni interactions and the school’s brand power, from recruiters’ viewpoints.

In Learning, the consideration was whether the curriculum was applicable to real-world business situations. The degree of emphasis on innovation, problem-solving, and strategic thinking besides the level of inspiration and support from instructors, class size, and collaboration were also taken into account.

In Entrepreneurship, the schools were ranked according to whether the graduates showed exceptional entrepreneurial skills and drive.

Bloomberg ranked 131 business schools around the world, up from 124 in 2018, with 94 in the U.S. Programs can be located anywhere in the world, but classes must be taught primarily in English.

All schools were required to submit employment data for the Class of 2018, following standards set by MBA CSEA, a trade group founded in 1994 to establish and collect consistent, comparable, peer-reviewed data.
