Why would you choose the UK as an MBA destination and select Cambridge Judge as one of the schools to put in an application? Have a look at the experience of Srishti Warman from India, with five years’ work experience as a Business Analyst at Barclays.

Make a List of Your Requirements

Before enrolling for the full-time one-year MBA program at Cambridge Judge, Srishti was initially in a dilemma as to which business schools she should apply.

In a blog post on the school website, she says you need to have clear goals as to what you want from the school and the surroundings that make you flourish.

In her case, she took a few weeks to draw up her requirements. She says she wanted to study in a prestigious institution, so the school had to rank in the global top 20.

It should have excellent post-MBA recruitment statistics, especially for international students, in line with the rate of return, jobs being offered in industries in-sync with her career goals. She was also looking for easy to manage visa policies to work in the country as an international student post -MBA.

Since she proposed to finance her studies by taking a huge loan, she wanted schools that offered scholarships.

Srishti was looking for a school with smaller class sizes and collaborative culture. “The class should be as diverse as possible to help me grow and develop a truly global perspective,” she says.

Her other requirements were that she should not face any language barriers to communicate with employers as well as local communities. The school should ideally be in an urban area, as well as offering a one-year course duration.

How Did Cambridge Judge Measure Up?

She found that Cambridge Judge fulfilled all the criteria. Among the positives she noted was that more than 90% of the class post-MBA changed at least their industry or profile or geography, with one third changing all three.

The school was also close to the Silicon Fen (the name given to the region around Cambridge, home to a large cluster of high-tech businesses focusing on software, electronics and biotechnology).

She was also happy that 95% of the class comprised international students with almost 40% being women. Studying at the University of Cambridge would also make her part of the alumni network later.

The Admission Journey

Srishti attended the Cambridge MBA online webinars and also received a profile evaluation for her candidacy. She decided to apply in Round 1 as it was now the school with the highest preference for her.

Within three weeks of applying, she received a request for an interview on video by Skype. “While it’s obvious to feel nervous before an interview, I don’t think I had ever been so anxious before. My interviewer (Jane Davies) was a faculty member teaching at CJBS and the warmth in her tone made me feel relaxed immediately.

“From all the business school interviews that I had ever given (trust me as I have given at least five more interviews for different schools), in no other interview did I feel so supported by the interviewer to give the answers that I felt and knew were right. I knew then it was a clear reflection of what it would be to study in CJBS,” Srishti says.

In another three weeks, she was informed of her admission. She had also qualified for a merit-based bursary, which has helped support around a third of the tuition fee.

At present, the students, in teams of four or five, are at work in Australia, Cyprus, China, Costa Rica, Ireland and Switzerland.

They have landed up at client locations after completing detailed project briefs, establishing the set objectives for each strategic project.

The Global Consulting Project (GCP), one of the highlights of the Cambridge Judge MBA program as it allows the students to gain real-life work experience in countries across the globe

Student teams are at work in Australia, Cyprus, China, Costa Rica, Ireland and Switzerland. The GCP marks the end of the Management Praxis II core course that focuses on enhancing negotiation skills as well as the study of leading high-performance teams.

This is known as the Cambridge Venture Project CVP – the main purpose of which is to teach teamwork and collaboration, as well as client and team management.

Unlike working in a simulated and safe environment in the school campus, the students are exposed to clients who expect professional contributions with real recommendations and impact.

The GCP marks the end of the Management Praxis II core course, a sequel to the Management Praxis I course delivered in Michaelmas Term (October-November). This course, a cornerstone of the MBA curriculum at Cambridge, focuses on enhancing negotiation skills as well as the study of leading high-performance teams.

The teams practice what they are learning in the Management Praxis I class on a real-life project; working in their study groups on a project that has been allocated to them.

Forté Foundation scholar Natalia Dziergwa describes the Global Consulting Project as “one of the most wonderful MBA experiences.”

This is known as the Cambridge Venture Project CVP – the main purpose of which is to teach teamwork and collaboration, as well as client and team management.

“You also get to learn about a range of interesting topics, meet some fascinating clients and work on their bright ideas,” the school says in a statement.

Later with the GCP, students get another opportunity to work with a client but this time the focus is more strategic and consultative. It enables them to reflect on the integration of skills and practice.

They will be able to use the new skills they have learnt in class to build stronger, more cohesive teams for their GCP.

This year, the GCP has once again allowed current students to gain a rich experience within a variety of industry sectors ranging from the arts, healthcare, finance, energy and environment, and NGOs; with companies such as Bloomberg, Uber, Barclays, the World Health Organization, Carnegie Hall and Emirates Airlines.

While the MBA Business Development team at CJBS typically sources the majority of the GCPs, a number of projects this year were sourced by the students themselves.

Student-sourced GCPs this year include Bridges Fund Management in the UK, as well as the global travel brand – Beautiful Destinations in New York and Sydney Opera House, Australia.

Natalia Khetagurova was revisiting Bloomberg NEF and said it was “still mesmerising”. This MBA team is sited within the New Energy Finance section at Bloomberg LP.

Based in London, the Bloomberg LP HQ welcomed the Cambridge MBA team. The European headquarters for Bloomberg is designed to foster innovation and encourage collaboration, the same values that Cambridge MBAs are expected to develop and enhances across the program.

‘Team Circus’ was based in Cyprus for a circular economy project with Cablenet run in conjunction with the CJBS Circular Economy Centre. Cablenet, founded in 2003, offers telecommunication and entertainment services to the corporate and retail market. It comprises 230 employees across three cities.

Forté Foundation scholar Natalia Dziergwa describes the Global Consulting Project as “one of the most wonderful MBA experiences.”

Working again with the CJBS Circular Economy Centre but this time-based in Warsaw, Martin Siagian says, “We have been working with Poland’s largest IT solutions company to come up with a circular economy model where we leverage the Internet of Things (IoT) to balance electricity supply and demand in Poland. Through a smart grid and smart home, this will hopefully enable a better electricity usage in Poland in the future”.

Julia Polnareva says, “From the UK to the far reaches of Ecuador, ‘Team Chilli’ was in Santo Domingo Ecuador with client Dev Equity. Working with a company that enables smallholder farmers to have dignified incomes, our team visited a chilli pepper farm along with the R&D facility on the consulting project.”

The GCP is such an important leaning milestone for students, allowing them to apply their knowledge, their ‘softer skills’ and to gain experience in new sectors.

“The teams are always tested in these high-time pressured situations of real consulting work. We look forward to great results again and a fantastic range of experiences,” she added. Detailed case studies of several projects will be available on the school website from May 2019.(Image Source: wikipedia.org)

The Cambridge Judge MBA employment report for the 2017-18 class has revealed that 96% of the graduates had made a switch of either country, job function or industry sector, with 33%switching all three. They received a £95,779 average salary package.

The annual report published on April 4, <g class="gr_ gr_4 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Punctuation only-ins replaceWithoutSep" id="4" data-gr-id="4">2019</g> says that 93% received job offers three months out, while 19 participants embarked on the entrepreneurship path by starting their own company.

The one-year full-time residential program is a unique, one-year learning experience, combining academic rigour with a focus on experiential, team-based learning, the school says on its website.

The
graduates were working in 24 countries around the world, with almost half of
the class choosing to continue their careers in the UK.

96% of the graduates had made a switch of either country, job
function or industry sector, with 33% switching all three

Among the major recruiters were Microsoft, Uber, L.E.K.
Consulting, Amazon, McKinsey & Company, AdStream, Google and Shopee

Over 100 organisations recruited from the class of 2017, with
22% of the class moving into consulting roles and 17% into roles in the finance
sector.

Just over half of the class moved into roles in industry,
with 75% of those roles in the technology/internet/e-commerce sector.

Margaret
O’Neill, Head of Admissions and Careers for the Cambridge MBA, said, “We are
proud to celebrate the success of our MBA 2017 class. Global mobility resulting
from the Cambridge MBA is reflected in the diversity of employers the graduates
choose to work for.

“The
most popular global employers of the class post-MBA included the big and
growing tech sector, with employers such as Microsoft, Uber, Amazon and Google
followed closely by the commercial retail sector AdStream and Shopee while the
traditional consultancy sector with players like L.E.K. Consulting and McKinsey
& Company still representing a large number.”

Over 100 organisations recruited from the class of 2017, with 22% of the class moving into consulting roles and 17% into roles in the finance sector.

She adds, “Cambridge Judge Business School and the University of Cambridge provide unrivalled opportunities for networking and learning. We are delighted that our demanding, innovative and experiential MBA program has allowed the class of MBA 2017 to develop the skills, experience and network they needed to achieve their goals.”

“Recruiters from across the world maintain a strong relationship with the Cambridge MBA, working with us to identify the talent needed to drive global business. Over 100 organisations recruited from the class of 2017, with 22% of the class moving into consulting roles and 17% into roles in the finance sector.

Just over half of the class moved into roles in industry, with 75% of those roles in the technology/internet/e-commerce sector. This reflects both the continued global growth in the technology sector, and Cambridge Judge Business School’s unique place at the heart of one the most successful technology clusters in Europe, the school said on its website.

As
part of the Cambridge MBA, students undertake a career development programme
alongside their studies, during which they work closely with the MBA Careers
team to create a personalised plan based on career aspirations. It includes
practical workshops, coaching, as well as recruitment and networking events
with employers.
