USC Marshall School’s IBEAR MBA is a full time one-year accelerated global MBA program targeting experienced professionals with an average of 10 years of work experience and a global focus.

Delivered at USC’s Los Angeles campus, participants complete 19 courses in five eight-week terms from July of each year to the next. Established in 1978, it has 1500 graduates in leadership positions in more than 60 countries around the globe.

IBEAR participants, being mid career professionals, are approximately 5 years older on average than students in two-year MBA programs. Thus, many of them seek to re-enter the job market at a more senior level than the average two-year MBA. The opportunity cost of attending a one-year program as opposed to a two-year program is more attractive to mid career professionals looking to return to the job market as soon as possible.

In the present batch, the Class size is 56 with participants representing 62 countries. The average age is 33 in the range of 28-50 plus. The average work experience is 10 years in the range of 6-25 plus. The GMAT Average is 630.

They also tend to be more diverse than those in other MBA programs. A typical class consists of 55 participants from 15 countries with a very strong international focus. Almost 75% of the class comes from outside the US. They also have significant international experience and substantive global expertise. They use more international cases than other faculty.

The participants have the option of taking 3 electives. They are also required to participate in an intense 17-week-long client commissioned International Business Consulting Project (IBCP) that includes international travel.

Program Schedule

The IBEAR program begins in late July of one year and ends in mid July of the next. Thos lacking proficiency in English are expected to arrive in June to take supplemental English language lessons at USC’s Language Academy.

Admission Criteria

Applicants should have minimum 6 years of experience (business, non-profit, government, military, post-graduate education), valid GMAT or GRE score, TOEFL or IELTS score (where applicable) and a bachelor’s degree.

The GMAT average is normally 630 plus or minus 5 points. Applicants should score 570 or higher. The GMAT average reflects the older average age of participants (33 or 34) and the fact that many participants speak English as a second language (75% of participants are foreign nationals).

The TOEFL average normally approximates 100 IBT, 250 CBT, OR 600 PBT. Some participants are required to arrive early for additional English study, based on their scores and their background.

Admission decisions are based upon the quality and length of the applicant’s work experience, as well as the experience and quality of the applicant’s educational background, test scores, interviews, application essays, and recommendations.

International students are required to take the USC International Student English (ISE) exam on arrival at USC, unless they submit either a TOEFL score of 90 or more (IBT) with no less than 20 on each section, or an IELTS score of 6.5 with no less than 6 on each band score. Depending on the test scores (GMAT, GRE, TOEFL, IELTS), IBEAR may recommend or require additional English work before or after the IBEAR MBA program begins

Applicants could apply directly on-line at https://usc.liaisoncas.com/applicant-ux/#/login. IBEAR uses a rolling admissions process. Applications are accepted and evaluated until a class of individuals with distinguished academic credentials and professional experience is formed. Applicants are also encouraged to open their application file as early as possible (e.g., January or earlier) by completing the on-line application form and submitting transcripts.

“We start evaluating and admitting applications in November of each year. We urge that applicants complete the application process no later than May 15th of the following year, as the class starts to get full by this date. From time to time, we do make exceptions for strong candidates beyond May 15th. Applicants are not required to wait for test results before submitting applications,” the B-school said. International applicants are to apply as early as possible given the length of time it takes to get student visa approvals.

The files are reviewed as soon as they are complete, beginning in November. “After you have completed your application file and interviewed, it will take us approximately two weeks to evaluate your application and make a decision. If you are a foreign national it may take somewhat longer for an official USC decision because your file must also be reviewed by USC International Admissions. Admitted applicants are informed immediately by phone or via email,” the school said.

Interviews will be conducted by staff or alumni either in person or through Skype. The applicant’s undergraduate degree need not be on business as admission is granted to individuals from a broad spectrum of academic and work experience backgrounds.

Class Profile

In the present batch, the Class size is 56 with participants representing 62 countries. The average age is 33 in the range of 28-50 plus. The average work experience is 10 years in the range of 6-25 plus. The GMAT Average is 630.

Social Sciences and Humanities form 20% followed by Economics at 9% and Computer Science at 5%.

The gift from Michael.R.B Uytengsu, MBA Class of ’90 will go towards a new building and scholarships to support development of emerging business leaders

A generous gift from USC Marshall School of Business alumnus Michael R. B. Uytengsu ’90 will create the Michael R. B. Uytengsu Endowed Scholarship Fund and name the first floor of Jill and Frank Fertitta Hall, the future home of USC Marshall’s undergraduate program.

The $4 million gift will increase USC Marshall’s ability to support high-achieving students and transform the School’s educational environment, facilitating more collaborative and technology-enabled learning experiences.

With construction expected to begin this May and completion set for fall 2016, Fertitta Hall – to be located at the corner of Figueroa Street and Exposition Boulevard, within view of the University’s main entrance – will increase USC Marshall’s undergraduate student classroom capacity by close to one-third. Together with the Michael R. B. Uytengsu Endowed Scholarship Fund, the new building will set a national standard for excellence in undergraduate business education.

“Endowed scholarships ensure that we can attract talented students regardless of their financial situation, and the new building will enable undergraduate learning and research to flourish,” said James G. Ellis, dean of the USC Marshall School of Business. “Michael’s dedication to supporting Marshall and its students will directly benefit our community for generations to come.”

Originally an investment banker specializing in global infrastructure projects with Salomon Brothers in New York and then in Hong Kong, Uytengsu joined his family’s food business in 1993. Over the course of a highly successful career, he has orchestrated complex restructurings and roll-up transactions in the U.S. snack food industry, from the merger between Sunshine Biscuits and the Keebler Company to the formation of National Pretzel, which he sold to Con Agra Foods in 2011. Uytengsu’s recent ventures include HK Anderson pretzels and Somersault Snacks; he also is a founding partner of Tusk Estates, a luxury wine brand in Napa Valley.

Including brother Wilfred (Fred)’83, the Uytengsu family has demonstrated a long-standing commitment to robust philanthropic support of USC. A recent $8 million gift from Fred Uytengsu – the largest ever made to the athletics department by a former student-athlete – funded the Uytengsu Aquatics Center, providing a new home for the Trojan men’s and women’s swimming, diving and water polo teams. In 2013, the siblings received the Entrepreneurs of the Year and Alumni of the Year awards from USC Marshall’s Lloyd Greif Center for Entrepreneurial Studies. At the ceremony, Michael Uytengsu announced his intention to donate one percent of the equity from his latest business venture, Somersault Snack Co., to USC.

“The education I received at Marshall gave me a strong foundation for success,” Michael Uytengsu said. “My family believes in the importance of giving back and in making a difference for students who are eager for an education but may not have the means to access it. If all USC alumni who own businesses would contribute a portion of their profits to the school, the students and the alumni would both benefit immensely.”

The gift is part of The Campaign for the University of Southern California, a multi-year effort to secure $6 billion or more in private support from individual donors, foundations and corporations. At the time of its launch, the campaign had the largest fundraising goal ever announced in higher education; to date, more than half that amount has already been raised.

Professor Kathleen Allen of USC Marshall School of Business has been awarded the 2014 Entrepreneurship Educator of the Year award. Past winners of the award include Tom Byers of Stanford University and Steven P. Nichols of University of Texas, Austin.

The new year has started on a good note for USC Marshall School of Business, USA. On January 10, the United States Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship (USASBE) awarded its prestigious 2014 Entrepreneurship Educator of the Year Award to USC Marshall School of Business Professor Kathleen Allen.

The award is given to an entrepreneurship educator who has provided distinguished leadership in the field and contributed greatly to the way scholars think about and approach entrepreneurship teaching and learning. In bestowing the award, the USABE award committee cited the number of books and publications Allen has contributed to the field and highlighted her work on the forefront of technology commercialization.

In nominating Allen for the award, James Ellis, dean of the Marshall School, acknowledged that Allen, a USC professor for more than 20 years, has significantly contributed to the “national and international dialogue on entrepreneurship education.”

“Dr. Allen has been instrumental in building our curriculum [and] spearheading our university’s earliest interdisciplinary efforts in entrepreneurial education,” Ellis continued. “It is impossible to have a conversation with Dr. Allen without recognizing her immense, sincere, and deep commitment to both the educational experience and to entrepreneurship education as a whole.”

Greif Center Co-Director Helena Yli-Renko emphasized Allen’s “significant innovations” in taking the field of entrepreneurship beyond the business school. “She has been a vocal advocate,” Yli-Renko said, “of teaching entrepreneurship to engineers, scientists, medical doctors, and others with non-business backgrounds.”

Allen, also a founding director of the Marshall Center for Technology Commercialization, is the author more than 15 books in the field of entrepreneurship and technology commercialization including the leading texts Launching New Ventures and Entrepreneurship for Scientists and Engineers. She works with scientists and engineers to identify markets and applications for their technologies, develop commercialization teams, and prepare to seek funding and has been active in the commercialization of space entrepreneurship and ensuring that broadband is delivered to rural areas.

USASBE is the largest independent, professional, academic organization in the world dedicated to advancing the discipline of entrepreneurship. It is presently comprised of more than 1,000 member institutions—including primarily, but not exclusively, universities and colleges.

The announcement is is another feather in the cap for the Los Angeles based USC Marshall School of Business which
