Chief Economic Advisor Dr Krishnamurthy Subramanian has called upon graduating students of the Indian School of Business (ISB) not to limit themselves to thinking about making money but aspire to make an impact by changing the way things are done.

Delivering his address at the Graduation Day ceremony at the ISB campus in Hyderabad on January 28, Dr Subramanian said, “While setting the objectives for having a good life for us and our family is something we all strive for, we should also think about impacting others.

“We should not limit ourselves to thinking that we want to make money but aspire to make an impact. I sincerely believe that if your only ambition in life is to become rich then it shows extreme poverty of ambition,” he added.

“If one person changes the way things are done, then automatically there will be a change in equilibrium and that is what is needed right now in the country,” he said.

Following his appointment as Chief Economic Advisor to the Union Government in December 2018, Dr Subramanian is at present on leave from ISB. He received the Professor of the Year Award at the ceremony.

A PhD from the University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business, his research in banking, law and finance, innovation and economic growth, and corporate governance has been published in several journals, including The Review of Financial Studies, the Journal of Financial Economics, the Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis and the Journal of Law and Economics.

He had earlier worked as a consultant with JPMorgan Chase in New York and served in a management role in the elite derivatives research group at ICICI Ltd.

Cyient founder and executive chairman Dr BVR Mohan Reddy was the chief guest at the ceremony. He recounted his experience in building a global, scalable, sustainable and successful Indian company that focused on engineering, manufacturing, data analytics, and networks & operations.

Cyient had transformed itself to deliver higher value to customers by having values as its foundation, quality and innovation as its DNA and people as its core strength, he said.

“We are at an intersection of Industry 4.0, Globalisation 4.0 and Education 4.0. And this presents many opportunities to the leaders of tomorrow so that they can adapt and build an inclusive future.

“You all must learn continuously, invest in innovation and build constructive collaboration with people, organisations and the society to thrive in the complex global business environment,” he added.

A total of 222 executives, 67 from PGPMAX Class of 2018, 71 from PGP MFAB Class of 2018 and 84 from PGPpro Class of 2018 had graduated. With this, the ISB alumni network now reached around 9,700 spread across different parts of the world.
