IIM Kozhikode Launches One Year Full Time MBA

IIM Kozhikode has announced a new, One Year Full-Time, Residential, Post Graduate Programme in Business Leadership. With this, the institute has added to its portfolio of programmes aimed at an experienced audience. IIM K already offers a two-year full-time Executive MBA programme for working professionals.

Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Kozhikode has launched a new postgraduate management programme focused on developing potential business leaders. This full-time, residential, one-year programme addresses the need to provide focused, contemporary and holistic business leadership inputs to experienced executives who aspire for top jobs in large corporates.

Prof. Debashis Chatterjee, Director of IIM Kozhikode, said, “This leadership programme aims to systematically nurture and shape experienced minds into high potential leaders who are authentic, capable, multi-dimensional, and grounded in core values.  The programme will transcend conventional management instruction and pedagogy to provide focused learning.” He added, “Businesses, today, need leaders to sustain and thrive in a volatile, connected and non-linear world and this new offering is precisely aimed to fill this gap”

The programme will involve an innovative admission process, unique curriculum and pedagogy that combines diverse perspectives to provide holistic inputs. “While we have put together just the most appropriate content in the curriculum, the highlight of the programme would be the learning methods that would attempt to bring out true leadership potential of the candidates through personalized and reflective learning approaches,” said Prof. Debashis Chatterjee.

The gap for such an academic programme is identified based on the fact that a large number of corporates have been demanding focused inputs for their high-potential, mid-level executives that prepare them to take up leadership roles within the organization.

The Chairperson of the new programme, Prof. Venkataraman, who himself served in corporate leadership roles before taking up academics emphasized that “Finding ready leadership talent has become increasingly difficult.  Large companies today expect their HR departments to play a strategic role in identifying high potential candidates within the organization early on and groom them for bigger roles towards developing a leadership pipeline. We would expect that corporations committed to the development of leaders who combine both professional and organizational values, would encourage and facilitate their select executives to apply to the programme and discover their leadership potential.”

Talking to OneYearMBA.com, Prof Venkataraman said the programme is targeted at those with a minimum three years of work experience. “We expect the program would benefit people with 3-8 years of experience who might not have thought or gone the CAT route initially,” he added.

Asked about the intake, he said, “Initially, we would start small, a compact class up to 60. However, no specific number is being considered. The classes will be held in Kozhikode campus.

On successful completion of the programme, the students will be awarded an MBA degree. They will then join the alumni ranks. IIMK will also offer them campus placements, he added.

The programme is likely to combine intensive in-class, inspiring off-campus and immersive international components towards the holistic development of the participants.

The deadline for online submission of applications on the Institute’s website is August 15, 2019 and classes would commence in November 2019.

Course Design

The PGP-BL design seeks to encourage and train students to embrace ambiguity, align to reality, focus on sustainability, and reflect and aspire to wholeness. In an approach that resonates with IIMK’s mission of “Globalizing Indian Thought”, the program design will also draw upon some of the fundamental principles underlying ancient Indian thought to nurture a genre of exemplary leadership talent.

The programme will encourage students to cut through the confusion to develop clarity, appreciate the whole rather than the discrete, and understand the links across different functional areas. In leveraging a talent pool that has the right mix of work experience, mental agility, fundamental disciplinary grounding and positive attitude, the PGP-BL curriculum will have a three-pronged approach to:

  1. Develop a deep familiarization about the demands of a VUCA world – a business environment that is rapidly evolving and uncertain- and the ability to sift through complexity to recognize the critical Corel.
  2. Nurture discernment and informed decision-making through not only through the understanding of appropriate tools, frameworks and processes but also by centrally ingraining the principles of sustainability.
  3. Holistic thinking that enables the vision of the bigger picture and a fine understanding of the links across different functional areas

Live projects, structured as an extended but punctuated engagement, with a panel of partner firms will be an integral feature of the programme. This will facilitate action research, continued live engagement on managerial problems and help develop stakeholder management skills. The PGP-BL includes a dedicated 2-week global immersion module at a premier European or American university or business school. This will provide the students, a definitive international experience that involves both academic instruction as well as experiential and cross-cultural learning, including visits and interactions with key local businesses. The academic component would involve an assessment module that maps to the overall course credits, and the subject of instruction would be chosen in relation to the speciality or expertise of the country involved (e.g. luxury business management in Italy, Innovation/ Design thinking in Germany/ Italy etc.)

One of the objectives of this module is to broaden students’ knowledge about various aspects of managing businesses in a multicultural environment, especially in a rapidly changing global environment.
