Hello Deb, sorry for the late response as I was in midst of exams.

We have a lot of people with 15 yr+ exp in our batch and I think most of them were looking to enhance their career by adding a valuable MBA degree to their portfolio. More importantly people with IT experience love the course (including myself 9 years work ex) as it exposes us to whole gamut of business functions and prepares us for senior leadership roles.

Moving from IT to consulting (technology or business consulting) is a perfect reason to pursue one year program (but from prestigious schools only) however it is not as easy as you have IT + MBA so you get the business consulting role, you need to work very hard during the course and prepare yourself for consulting type interviews (case based). A few seniors have got in strategy roles (IT people will mostly get technology strategy) but a few have got into management consultancy such as McKinsey, BMGI, etc. Your expectation are in the right but you are key driver to get their. I come from technology background and I aspire to be in core finance mgmt functions.

Your salary situation and mine are very similar, I've worked all my 8 years in USA for an investment bank and if I convert my base salary (leave the bonus) even at PPP rate of Rs. 22 per dollar I won't find a match here. But Is that the main consideration you have to pursue an MBA then I agree you might be disappointed. But if you look a little long term career progression than most of senior from my program are doing well.

Taking an off will only be a wise decision if you are clear why you want to do an MBA and not just get a salary hike. You can connect with me on 'Ask Vinay' on the Forum at http://www.oneyearmba.co.in/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=2218 and we can discuss this in more detail.

Hi Vinay,

Good insight into the PGPX world. I am presently considering taking the 1 year program but am confused if this will be a right career decision considering my work ex.
15 yrs of work ex in IT services and presently working as senior project manager out of Kolkata with a MNC.
Instead of going along the path for project management would like to move to consulting or strategy in the same industry or a different one and thinking a MBA will help me to achieve it. How realistic is my assessment?

My present salary is more than the published average domestic salary for the 1 yr MBA placements.
Will taking a year off from work a wise decision?

Look forward to your advise.

Thanks
