700 Average GMAT, 9+ Years Average Work Ex: Meet IIM B’s MBA Class Of 2016

The Class of 2016 of IIM B’s MBA programme – the One Year Full Time Executive Post Graduate Programme in Management (EPGP) has an impressive profile. The class has 72 students with an average work experience of 9+ years, of which 2+ years is international work experience. However, diversity continues to remain the fly in the ointment.   

Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore’s (IIM B) MBA Class of 2016 impresses with strong numbers on critical parameters: the average GMAT score this year is 700, the Class’ 9+ years of average work experience exceeds that of top full time European MBA’s at IMD & INSEAD which typically have participants with 7+ years of work experience (Average work ex. at top US programmes hovers around 5 years).  

The percentage of women in the Class is healthy – women make up a quarter of the MBA class this year.

However the Achilles heel of Indian MBA programmes – the dominance of students from one background alone continues to pose a problem for the B-School.  

Candidates from IT services sector absolutely dominate the MBA Class of 2016 at IIM B.

49% of students come from this sector with IT products occupying the second spot way down at 15% followed by engineering at 14%.

If one considers students from engineering profiles as a whole (IT services, IT products, Engineering) you find that 78% of the class comes from this background. 

In distribution by function, project management topped the list at 23.61% followed by consulting 20.83% and product development/management 15.28%.

The class with a student strength of 72 has an average GMAT score of 700. Of them, 46% had scores between 690-710, 28% between 650-680, 19% between 720-740 and 7% with scores above 740.

As far as the age distribution is concerned, 31% are in the 30-31 bracket, 29% in 32-33, 28% less than 29 and 13% in more than 33 bracket.

The average total work experience of the Class stands at 31 years, 6 months and international work experience at 2 years 3 months as on March 2015.

Of them, 35% had 7-8 years of work experience followed by 32% with more than 10 years, 22% with 5-6 years and 11% with 9-10 years.
