As per a recent Business Standard report, The Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC) has acquired NMAT exam in India from the Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (NMIMS).

Business Standard says GMAC will assume ownership and management of NMAT and the exam will be re-titled the ‘NMAT by GMAC’. This is its first ever acquisition of a test asset anywhere in the world.

NMIMS Management Aptitude Test or NMAT is the MBA entrance exam for admissions to Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (NMIMS) Mumbai. It is designed on a multiple-choice question format that includes Language Skills; Quantitative Skills, Data Interpretation and Data Sufficiency; and Logical Reasoning.

Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC) is a non-profit education organization of leading graduate business schools and owner of the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT exam), used by more than 6,100 graduate business and management programmes worldwide.

GMAC says that they also would look at making the scores valid for five years similar to what is available for the GMAT exam

The deal marks a new stage in GMAC’s participation in the India graduate management admissions market and complements the presence of the organization’s GMAT exam.

Sangeet Chowfla, President and CEO of GMAC said that the registration window for students for ‘NMAT by GMAC’ will open in July 2015 for the examination that will be held in October, November and December across the country in 75 test dates.

Explaining the rationale behind this deal, Chowfla said that their goal was to enter this domestic market of management entrance tests which is fragmented and have a test which has students from diverse backgrounds being screened on whether they have the skill-sets required in a classroom.

“The test is psychometric-technique based and we discovered that it was diverse than the other tests in the Indian market. It was better than the others and also had almost double the number of women test-takers than CAT (Common Admission Test used for admission to Indian Institutes of Management and other business schools). Hence, we chose NMAT,” he added.

GMAC announced that along with the graduate management programs of NMIMS, Alliance University, SRM University, BML Munjal University, VIT University, ICFAI Business School (IBS) and Ansal University have chosen to accept the NMAT by GMAC exam for admissions to their graduate management programs.

For students, the process of taking the exam will remain the same. GMAC plans to improve some aspects of score reporting to schools that accept the NMAT by GMAC, and will, in subsequent years, incorporate additional features that will enhance the test-taker experience.

Chowfla explained that they are presently looking into what modifications that need to be made and are working on tightening the psychometrics of the test design.Going forward, he said that they also would look at making the scores valid for five years similar to what is available for the GMAT exam. “We will continue to enhance the test, be it through a longer testing window, by having a longer validity for the scores and providing online access to the test scores for the schools,” he said.Talking about similar deals for transfer of similar such assets from other business schools, he said that GMAC would be happy to find mechanisms to collaborate on other tests too.The NMAT by GMAC exam will be offered between October and December 2015, and registration will commence in July 2015.
