INSEAD Makes A ‘Splash’ With Community Projects

Community projects that form part of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities of top firms and meaningful engagement of employees have drawn beneficial results even to the extent of revealing hitherto hidden leadership qualities while expanding capacity to face and overcome challenges.

Realising the importance being accorded to CSR, several Business schools like INSEAD take care to include community projects in the MBA program.

Schon Beechler, INSEAD Senior Affiliate Professor of Leadership and Organisational Behaviour, in a blog post, provides the example of Santander Consumer Finance UK (SCUK) to illustrate the point about beneficial effects of community projects.

Way back in 2008, an employees survey of the profitably-run company revealed a strong desire among them to give back something to the local community.

Searching for options, he got in touch with Splash Community Projects, a UK-based company that puts corporate employees on real-life community projects to help children’s charities and community organisations.

Splash, run by former British defence personnel, engages volunteers in building playgrounds and renovating buildings, ensuring quality and on time completion of projects.

Six years down the line, Santander has recorded improving employee engagement and even financial performance that is attributed to its community projects.

Beechler says it is consistent with research findings that employees gain greater satisfaction in their work as a result of volunteering. The firms also had improved retention of employees who have been engaged in meaningful community service.

The findings are significant in that, the world over, separate surveys and research by Gallup and Deloitte, revealed that only about 13% employees were engaged at work. However, this does not mean that once they get involved in community service, the situation would improve.

The catch lies in the fact that unless the employee feels motivated to join the projects without being cynical or feeling pressurized, it may not bring the desired results. The project in hand should resonate with employees, their values and those of the firm.

Splash tries to make the project difficult and challenging for the participants, whether from corporate firms or business schools.

For instance, the team from Santandar was shown a construction plan and the team members assumed that the actual construction would be done by someone else. They panicked on realising that they had to do the entire project themselves.

The Splash managers then asked them if they could break down the project into smaller parts, set priorities and use the skills they possessed. It made the achievement of completing the project more meaningful in the end.

Beechler says at INSEAD, the one-year MBA Programme begins with a compulsory Splash project near its campuses in Fontainebleau and Singapore. The projects, co-designed by the faculty and the Splash team, create an environment where the students could get to know each other and begin to work together in very diverse teams. Faculty and deans also participate to demonstrate management commitment.

During the course of the project, among all the fun, unexpected changes and challenges are thrown in. For example, having the client tell the students mid-stream that they want to redesign the project.

Beechler contends that companies that have worked on such projects say that done well, these projects can act as a catalyst to uncover potential leaders who may emerge when thrown into the wilderness with their colleagues.

One way this happens is to assign group leaders and day leaders who aren’t day-to-day managers at work. They are made to look after others, motivate the troops and ensure everyone has the resources they need.

Steve Daniels, non-executive chairman of Splash Projects, says that this has helped numerous clients notice talented employees within the ranks who would not normally be noticed within corporate structures.

The importance of leadership participation matters for other reasons, too. Daniels believes that the presence of both current leaders and those on the succession plan is essential, not just to lead but to take part and to infuse learnings into the organisation later.

Yet another benefit is that the leaders could identify barriers to productivity within the firm when they see what their employees are capable of in the field without technology. Face-to-face communication, regular catch ups and end-of-day handovers between staff at Splash could reveal new ways of working.

Splash was now working with organisations to make the projects more lasting after finding that over a period, the improved engagement between staff dissipates with barriers like emails, meetings and bureaucracy making a comeback.

Thus, according to Daniels, the next stage should be for them to pay more attention to embedding the skills learned and insights attained on community projects back into the organisation.

This can be done, he says, by doing a team debrief six to eight weeks after the project to discuss how barriers were brought down on the project and how they can be kept down back in the firm.

$105,700 Average Salary At INSEAD 2015 MBA Placements

INSEAD, with campuses in Paris & Singapore, has released the placement report for its MBA Class of 2014-15. The average salary this year is $105,700.

As per INSEAD, the placements ended on a positive note this year with a majority of the class employed soon after graduation. The employment report quotes, Dr Guido Gianasso, Global Director, Career Development as saying, “90 percent of our graduates reported employment three months after graduation.”

This year has been good for INSEAD. In September 2015, Forbes ranked INSEAD’s MBA as the “top ranked international one-year programme” with the highest return on investment of any MBA programme worldwide. As per the ranking, the MBA class of 2010 earned enough to pay for their degree in just 2.4 years.

Most recently INSEAD was ranked as the No.1 MBA in the world by Financial Times.

The total number of graduates this year stood at 1003 with an average age of 29 years and average work experience of 5.5 years. The average GMAT for the class this year was 700.

World’s No.1 MBA Is A One Year MBA: INSEAD Tops Financial Times 2016 MBA Ranking

INSEAD, the international business school that introduced the one-year MBA format to the world more than 50 years ago, has climbed on to the first rank in the FT 2016 Global MBA Ranking.

Incidentally, this is also the first time an institution that offers the short but “more value for money” course ended up on the top spot in the Global MBA Ranking list.

Insead, which had been in the running for the past 17 years, has beaten an elite club, including Harvard Business School, London Business School, the Wharton School and Stanford Graduate School of Business that now fill the remaining top five places with their two-year programmes.

Insead’s Class of 2012 managed to garner an average salary of about $167,000 three years after graduation, nearly double their pre-MBA earnings. Alumni from the four other schools in the top five have roughly similar salaries and salary increases three years after graduation.

Insead, which had been in the running for the past 17 years, has beaten an elite club, including Harvard Business School, London Business School, the Wharton School and Stanford Graduate School of Business that now fill the remaining top five places with their two-year programmes.

However, Insead is ranked 10th for value for money, way above the four runners-up, which are in the bottom quarter in this category.

What seems to work in favour of Insead with the students is that while its program is only half as long, its fees are also lower than those of the top three US schools.

Insead was set up 58 years ago in Fontainebleau, outside Paris and prides in calling itself “the business school for the world”. The claim rings true as not only are more than 90 % of the professors and students from all across the world, with campuses in France and Singapore, the school is ranked fifth for international course experience. Its alumni are also ranked third for international mobility.

The school has, over the years, been progressively hiking investment in the past few years in the careers team from 30 to 40 since 2014. It also managed to get donations from the alumni for state-of-the-art video conferencing interview suites on all three campuses. The careers team also proved themselves equal to the challenge, despite the short 1-year format, the geographic diversity and sheer size of the 1020 strong student body.

INSEAD also could claim credit for facilitating 84% of students change sector, function or country, and an impressive 25% switch on all three dimensions. The school has built relationships with a huge roster of regular recruiters from across the globe, and last year graduates took positions with 440 different organizations in 64 countries.

Recruiters are also increasingly seeking the international mindset and ability to work across cultures that is the very essence of an INSEAD MBA graduate. INSEAD now has the highest proportion of alumni at the top 20 most attractive employers (according to a Universum survey) of any school.

Top for career progress: IIMA: Indian Institute of Management in Ahmedabad

The one-year, full-time residential PGPX programme from the Indian Institute of Management in Ahmedabad, within a decade of its introduction, has been ranked number one for the career progress of its alumni this year.

Widely regarded as the top business school in India, a reputation earned for its two-year pre-experience PGP programme, and ranked 15th in the world in the FT’s 2015 Masters in Management rankings, IIMA is also famous for its 100-acre campus and its teaching space designed by American architect Louis Kahn. The school, founded by local entrepreneurs with Harvard Business School, has followed the HBS lead and favours case-based teaching.

Highest new entrant: Renmin

Renmin University of China School of Business is a latecomer to the FT MBA rankings. The school has been offering an MBA since 1991 but became eligible to be ranked in 2010 when it was accredited by Equis (see methodology).

The Beijing school is the highest new entrant, in 43rd place, sandwiched between fellow mainland Chinese schools Antai College of Economics and Management at 39 and Fudan University School of Management at 47. The class of 2012 has an average salary of $94,000 three years after graduation, up 168 per cent on pre-MBA salary.

Highest riser: Carroll

The Carroll School of Management at Boston College has featured annually in the FT MBA rankings since it was first listed in 2006. It has enjoyed mixed fortunes during that time, from a high of 47th place in 2010 to a low of 93rd in 2013.

The 18th edition of the MBA ranking has been more favourable to the school. It climbed 21 places to 69th.

The average salary of its alumni three years after graduation went up by nearly $6,000 to $120,000 compared with last year’s rankings.
The school also registered a strong progression in terms of value-for-money and career progress.

Best international experience: Ipade

Ipade Business School features once again in the FT MBA rankings after having failed to make the top 100 for the past three years. It is ranked 80th overall, just above Incae Business School, the other school from Latin America.

All students study abroad for at least a month on exchange programmes at one of about 75 partner institutions worldwide. Students are also encouraged to go on an international study trip with the school subsidising about half the cost. Ipade adds two destinations per year based on students’ votes. The latest graduating cohort had the option to go to China or Vietnam.

INSEAD Expands Asian Footprint With S$55 million Leadership Development Centre in Singapore

Establishment of the Asia business innovation hub marks INSEAD’s fifteenth year in Singapore. The hub raises INSEAD’s student intake capacity by 50%.

INSEAD has opened the doors to a spanking new Leadership Development Centre in Singapore. The 10,000 sq. meter centre marks “Phase Three” in the school’s major Asia campus expansion. Combining business research and a rich and diverse learning environment to cultivate a global community of leaders, the new Leadership Development Centre is planned as a business innovation and executive education hub for the region.

Commenting from the inauguration ceremony in Singapore, INSEAD Dean Ilian Mihov said: “The Leadership Development Centre is a significant milestone for INSEAD in our continued global growth and commitment to providing relevant and locally-driven business education across Asia, and globally. This year, we celebrate INSEAD’s fifteenth anniversary in Singapore at the same time as Singapore celebrates its own fiftieth year of independence. We are proud to be a longstanding contributor to this thriving and constantly innovating global business centre. We owe much of our success here to the continued support of the Singapore Government and the Economic Development Board in particular.”

Covering an area of 10,000 square metres over six storeys, the S$55 million development will bring INSEAD’s total Asia campus footprint to two hectares. Raising capacity by 50 per cent, the centre will meet rapidly growing demands for management and leadership education in Asia.

Dr. Beh Swan Gin, Chairman of the Singapore Economic Development Board, said at the opening: “Over the past decade, Singapore has built up a strong ecosystem of business schools, leadership development specialists, HR consultancies and think-tanks to support the talent development needs of companies here and in the region. INSEAD’s Leadership Development Centre will further strengthen this ecosystem and develop leaders who can help their companies navigate the complex business environment today, harness the opportunities and overcome the challenges.”

Raising capacity by 50 per cent, the centre will meet rapidly growing demands for management and leadership education in Asia, and significantly increase the number of students, executives, top scholars and practitioners on-site.

Annually the Asia campus will welcome 500 MBA students, 5,000 executives, 90 Global Executive MBA students, and 30 participants enrolled in the Master of Finance programme. The growth will allow INSEAD to build its complement of world-class faculty in Singapore to 70.

Andreas Jacobs MBA’90D, Chairman of the Board of Directors, INSEAD, commented: “As a leading global business school, INSEAD’s multi-campus approach is unique in that it is established not simply to attract local students from each region, but to offer students worldwide a truly international education. The investment made in each of the regional hubs – Europe, Asia and the Middle East – goes beyond our bricks and mortar presence. At the core of INSEAD’s global offering is the large number of permanent faculty present on each campus, highly localised research and diverse mix of nationalities and cultures represented on each programme. This is what really sets INSEAD apart from many of the other business schools operating internationally today.”

INSEAD has a long history in Asia, dating back to 1974 when Professor Henri-Claude de Bettignies spearheaded INSEAD’s first programme on Business in Asia, followed by the introduction of a Euro Asia Centre in Fontainebleau in 1980, designed to unite European and Asian companies interested in expanding into each other’s regions.

Since the establishment of INSEAD’s Asia campus in Singapore in 2000, the business school has made a continued and significant investment in Singapore, and Asia. In 2014, participants on the INSEAD Asia campus in Singapore hailed from over 60 countries, including 50 participants in the Asia Section of the Global Executive MBA and 2,500 executive education participants. There are currently 63 permanent faculty based in Singapore, hailing from 22 countries, and 7,026 INSEAD alumni living and working in the Asia Pacific region.

The new Leadership Development Centre will further establish Singapore as a hub for business education in the region while allowing INSEAD to offer a broader range of executive education programmes, both degree and non-degree. With an emphasis on the Advanced Management Programme and Leadership courses, it will also expand the Global Executive MBA and Master of Finance programmes and catalyse the development of new specialised degree offerings. Top global companies seeking to establish professional development centres for their employees in Asia will also benefit from the new centre.

Annually the Asia campus will welcome 500 MBA students, 5,000 executives, 90 Global Executive MBA students, and 30 participants enrolled in the Master of Finance programme. The growth will allow INSEAD to build its complement of world-class faculty in Singapore to 70, which translates into expanding research in areas such as emerging markets, Asian business leadership, global strategy and other areas of critical importance to the region.

Features of the new INSEAD Leadership Development Centre include four amphitheatres each with seating capacity for 50 to 70. Each amphitheatre will be serviced by its own pre-function and meeting rooms, and several large and small meeting rooms will accommodate intensive team study and interaction.

The B-School says that the establishment of the new centre is supported by more than 154 highly placed volunteers from INSEAD’s network of alumni across the region, devoted to helping grow INSEAD. INSEAD has active National Alumni Associations in Singapore, Malaysia, India, Japan, Indonesia, S Korea, Australia, China, Hong Kong, Pakistan, Philippines and an Alumni Club in Thailand.
