True to form, Final Placements for the One Year Full-time Post-Graduate Program in Management (PGPM) Class of 2018 at SP Jain Institute of Management & Research (SPJIMR), Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, saw the students getting an average salary of Rs18.05 lakh with the highest salary recorded at Rs 27.03 lakh.

Stellar Profiles Behind The Stellar Placements

SPJIMR’s PGPM Class of 2018 comprised 136 bright sparks, including 22% female participants.

Almost a third of SPJIMR’s PGPM Class of 2018 had international work experience!

Key stats

Average age of participants: 29 years

Average GMAT score of 660

Average work experience: 6.4 years

76% of the students had work experience of 5-7 years & 23% of the students had 7-12 years of work experience

29% of the class had international work experience

More students with substantial years of work experience is a boon in an MBA Class since learning from your peers is an important component of learning in an MBA course.

With hundreds of years of corporate work experience between themselves, PGPM students were are able to relate better to situations discussed in case studies which are centred around mid-senior management problems.

Diverse Group of Participants

When the student body is diverse, learning grows by leaps and bounds as everyone brings a different perspective to the classroom.

It’s interesting therefore to see the wide range of functions and industries the students of the Class of 2018 were drawn from.

Industries represented

Information Technology (IT), which often contributes 50%-60% of the students in a class at most MBA programmes in India, contributed 20% to the Class of 2018.

BFSI at 16%, Manufacturing at 15% and Oil and Power & Utilities at 10% were big contributors to the student body and more than 15 different industries were represented in the class.

SPJIMR’s PGPM Class of 2018 had a healthy mix of many functions with no one function dominating the body.

Project Management, Software Development, Sales, Process & Operations, SCM/Procurement, Consulting, Analysis & Research were some of the top functions represented in the class.

The 15 Month PGPM program at SPJIMR Mumbai is Ranked the 4th Best 1 year MBA in India by Outlook. Judging from the heights the graduates of the programme are achieving the reputation seems well deserved.

The PGPM at SPJIMR Mumbai is an AICTE approved 15-month program with a one-year full-time residential component, preceded by a 3-month off campus blended web learning component. It is meant for professionals with a minimum of five years of work experience.

The placements from the course have been positive with the institute reporting 100% placement consistently from the PGPM programme.

Salaries in 2018 (for the PGPM Class of 2017 graduates) were stellar. The class managed to get a mean salary of Rs 1,800,023 and a maximum salary of Rs 2,958,450 at the final placements.

A majority of the students get hired into consulting profiles.

The recruiters base for the institute is large and diversified – top names such as Goldman Sachs, Google, KPMG, PWC, J.P Morgan, E&Y, Accenture, Flipkart recruiter regularly from the PGPM programme.

“The PGPM course’s return on investment was beyond my expectations…I got the location, role, industry and responsibility as desired.”

But institute stats aside, the best way of assessing the true worth of a management education program is to seek out views from alumni and chart their career graph.

With this in mind, we reached out to Chaithanya Gowda, Dy. General Manager, Jio Financial Services who enrolled for the one-year MBA with Marketing and General Management at SPJIMR (Class of 2014-15).

Asked his views on joining SPJIMR, he shared “The decision to join SPJIMR was an easy one – it’s a brand that stood very tall in the management education sector. It also provided one year MBA option which clearly fitted my requirement of the management program for exponential career growth after spending more than 5 years in the industry.”

“Compared to similar programs, the course fee is less. The class size is relatively small leading to closer interaction among the cohort and the faculty and a better chance of good offers coming your way during placements – Tushar Mahajan, Senior Consultant at Deloitte India

Asked about the return of investment (ROI) from earning the degree, he says, “The PGPM course’s return on investment was beyond my expectations…I got the location, role, industry and responsibility as desired. I got back to Bangalore to stay with my family with a challenging role of building something very close to a start-up within a huge organization like Reliance Jio.”

About the most valuable skills he gained from the program, Chaitanya listed leadership, peer learning, decision making, consultative selling and effective time management, considering the tight schedule during the program.

His advice to fresh entrants would be that SPJIMR is not a destination to reach, it is rather a journey to experience. “So in true spirits of the institute and program, enjoy your stay at SPJIMR. Stay focussed and the rest of the skills required for your success will be part of your journey.”

Sunil Velaga, Head – Asset Operations at Chip, a position he has been holding since September 2017 in a career spanning 10 years and 7 months, was initially keen on a 2 year MBA. But in the end he attended SPJIMR’s 1 Year PGPM for MBA General Management and specialisation in Operations Management (2007-08).

“I did my MBA in 2007, with four years of experience in the public sector, initially I had considered a 2-year MBA, but the admission committee asked me to consider the one year program also. Initially, I was a bit apprehensive but checked the profiles of alumni and other factors.

Later, considering that I would be spending lesser time away from work and other such factors, I enrolled for the program.

He says the return of investment was very high compared to IIMs and other institutions like ISB. SPJIMR places a lot of emphasis on work experience. It also focuses on society. Couple of courses like ADMAP proved useful.

SPJIMR’s Assessment and Development of Managerial and Administrative Potential (ADMAP) is aimed at creating leaders, entrepreneurs and managers who can “get things done”. A part of the “non-classroom learning,” it teaches the art of administration to business students in a fun, experiential way and involves ‘self-learning’ and ‘management of the self’ through the prism of ‘doing, observing, reflecting and recording’.

Tushar Mahajan, Senior Consultant at Deloitte India (Strategy & Operations-TMT) had also initially considered a 2-year program. Subsequently, he opted for the PGPM.

He says the program taught him how to handle pressure and work within a deadline. The intensive training has helped him in multiple tasks like handling clients and in quick decision making.

About the return of investment, he says compared to similar programs, the course fee is less. The class size is relatively small leading to closer interaction among the cohort and the faculty and a better chance of good offers coming your way during placements.

Promoted Post

For this purpose, the Centre for Development of Corporate Citizenship (DOCC) was set up to bring management education closer to reality in the Indian context. It exposes participants to the dynamics of life in rural India, where despite modern day tele-connectivity opening up new opportunities, many of the traditional challenges like poor infrastructure remain.

The participants have to work on a 10-day project to be implemented in socially or economically disadvantaged sectors in urban/rural areas through a variety of activities that include field visits, consulting and research in the social sector. The project reports are evaluated by an expert panel comprising faculty, representatives of NGOs and corporate leaders.

At SPJIMR, non-classroom learning involves value-based leadership development modules like Assessment & Development of Managerial and Administrative Potential (ADMAP), the Personal Growth Lab (PG Lab), the Development of Corporate Citizenship (DOCC) and the Science of Spirituality (SOS).

Along with theoretic classroom inputs, the program encourages you to constantly be in touch with the industry and industry trends, through working on live projects, cases, guest speaker series and mentorship programmes with the industry speakers. The annual conclave ‘Samavesh’ brings top business leaders on campus to interact with students, participate in panel discussions and enable a rich exchange between business and academics.

Family businesses used to thrive for generations with smooth succession from father or mother to son or daughter, with the children learning the ropes by working for the company under the close scrutiny and guidance of the elders.

This scenario is undergoing changes to meet present-day business demands in a globalised world. The young managers are increasingly flocking to Business schools to acquire more knowledge in the form of an MBA degree. The Schools, on their part, have started offering family business as a specialisation for the MBA.

Family Business MBA Programs in India

The Indian School of Business (ISB) offers a 15-month Post Graduate Program in Management for Family Business (PGP MFAB) with the fee pegged at Rs 37,35,000. IIM Bangalore’s Management Program for Entrepreneurs and Family Businesses (MPEFB) is shorter at 10 Months. The fee is Rs 5,53,000.

PGDM–Family Managed Business (PGDM–FMB) at Prin L.N Welingkar Institute Of Management Development & Research, Mumbai is an 11-month program with a fee of Rs 7,00,000. SP Jain School of Global Management’s Global Family Managed Business (Global FMB) is a 12-month program with the fee at Rs 9,61,000.

The aim is to bridge the gap within generations to make it more adaptive, covering topics like family governance, succession and ownership

Among the schools offering 24-month-long programs are SPJIMR, Mumbai’s Post Graduate Program in Family Managed Business (PGP-FMB) with a fee of Rs 11,05,000, The School of Business Management, NMIMS Mumbai’s MBA– Entrepreneurship & Family Business with a fee of Rs 9,06,000 (Under revision), SIBM Pune’s MBA (Innovation & Entrepreneurship) with a fee of Rs 13,20,000.

The Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India, Ahmedabad offers the Post Graduate Diploma in Management-Business Entrepreneurship (PGDM-BE) with a fee of Rs 5,33,400. The Institute of Management, NIRMA University, Ahmedabad has an MBA (Family Business & Entrepreneurship) with a fee of Rs 3,81,000 and Amity Business School Mumbai’s MBA-Family Business with a fee of Rs 7,44,000.

How’s Family Business MBA Different?

How is a Family Business MBA different from other MBA programs? Since the participants are already involved in the family business concern, they do not have to look for a job. Thus, everything is taught from only a business point of view, Urvashi Bihani, who completed an MBA in Family Business from Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (NMIMS) is quoted as saying in an article in Forbes India. She is the fourth generation of a family that runs the Bihani Education Trust in Rajasthan.

For others like Harshvardhan Pasari, a student of SP Jain Institute of Management and Research (SPJIMR), after joining the program, his involvement in the family’s mattress family has gone up to full-time eight hours a day.

SP Jain’s program allows him the flexibility as the students need to attend college for only seven days in a month for 13 months. They have to create a project report and submit it online in the 15th month for which they receive marks. The final report at the end of 18 months is put in front of a panel of judges.

ALSO READ: How Would Diversity In Class Room Help MBA Students?

Similarly, at ISB, students need to attend classes once a week every six weeks. For the other five weeks, they are to help the family in the business.

The students can choose electives to specialise in retail, real estate, manufacturing and services, based on their business. The college also facilitates internal hiring, where post-graduates from the FMB course can hire participants from other courses. Thus, the program facilitates networking.

Pasari has already roped in five students who would become suppliers of his mattresses. The program also offers participants gain insights into other businesses through group projects.

Most of the institutes have faculty with industry and multinational work experience. They are able to help the students in overcoming challenges.

Meanwhile, the new ideas and practices that the freshly minted MBAs bring into the family firms are often challenged by the elders. The ideas are closely scrutinised and sometimes rejected.

In order to overcome such resistance, some of the institutes like the ISB offer a specialised training programme that is complimentary for one more member of the family. The aim is to bridge the gap within generations to make it more adaptive, covering topics like family governance, succession and ownership.
