IIM Ahmedabad 2019 Placements – 1 Year MBA / MBA for Executives (PGPX)  – Full Report

IIM Ahmedabad has released the placement report for the One Year MBA / MBA for Executives (Post Graduate Program for Executives – PGPX) Class of 2019 on August 6, 2019.

IIM Ahmedabad is one of the few B-Schools to adhere to the Indian Placement Reporting Standards (IPRS) as per which placement numbers are provided as per a pre-approved standard format and the all placement numbers are are audited for accuracy by an external agency. The IIM Ahmedabad 1 Year MBA / PGPX Placement Report 2019 has been audited by the Brickwork Ratings India Pvt Ltd.

The final placement process for the Class of 2019 of the IIM Ahmedabad One Year MBA Programme, the full-time Post Graduate Programme in Management for Executives (PGPX), started in November 2018 and was completed in June end 2019. 

IIM A 1 Year MBA / MBA for Executives Placements 2019  – Highlights

• Higher domestic salary in 2019 compared to 2018: IIM Ahmedabad has shared that the highest domestic salary for One Year MBA / MBA For Executives (PGPX) has also gone up to Rs.60 Lacs per annum in 2019 as compared to Rs.54.6 LPA in 2018

The Maximum Earning Potential (MEP) or Cost to Company (CTC) in domestic for the 1-year PGPX Class of 2017 is reported at Rs 43,03,177, Median Rs 28,00,000 and Mean (average) Rs 28,48,538 after the audit by Brickwork Ratings under the Indian Placement Reporting Standards (IPRS). For the 2-year Post-Graduate program (PGP), the MEP is Rs 53,00,000, Median Rs 22,00,000 and Mean Rs 22,57,815.

In effect, it means that the average earnings for the PGPX cohort were Rs 5,90,723 more than that of the PGP class.

Earlier, the year 2015 had seen a Rs 72 lakh gap in highest international salaries and Rs 8.3 lakh gap in average domestic salaries received by PGPX and PGP students. The PGPX graduates had received Rs 1.38 crore as the highest international salary, Rs 54.55 Lakh the highest domestic salary and Rs 28.76 lakh as the average domestic salary.

The PGP graduates had netted Rs 73.38 lakh as highest international salary, Rs 53 lakh as the highest domestic salary and Rs 20.47 lakh average salary. This was also the year in which IIMA’s PGPX was ranked as the number 1 MBA program by Financial Times.

Incidentally, this was also the year in which IIMA’s PGPX was ranked as the number 1 MBA program by the Financial Times.

In 2016, PGPX graduates got Rs 43,73,002 as highest domestic MEP, Median 27,81,004 and Mean Rs 29,10,943. The PGP graduates received Rs 48,00,000 highest MEP but a Median Rs 21,00,000 and Mean Rs 22,14,043.

Here again, there is a difference of Rs 6,96,900 in the mean salary received by the PGPX and PGP cohorts.

In international MEP, PGPX graduates, just two of them, managed to get an MEP of $ 128,160 compared to $ 153,568 drawn by 15 PGP graduates. The Median was Rs 1,23,080 and Mean Rs 1,23, 080. The PGP had a Median of $65,345 and Mean $73,580.

It makes a difference of $49,500 in the mean salary received by the PGPX and PGP cohorts.

In the latest placement figures, none of the 91 students of the PGPX batch, including one who returned from a placement holiday, received an international offer. The 18 students of the PGP batch managed an International MEP of $ 127,275.

Since the PGPX cohort comprises of people from diverse backgrounds with a considerable work experience ranging from 6 years to 15 years, they were offered positions such as COO, Operations Director, Associate Vice President, Business Development Executive, Principle Consultant and Associate General Manager.

The recruiters included Accenture, Adani, Amazon, Capgemini, Genpack, IBM, ICICI Bank, McKinsey Digital, SAP, Telangana Government and Virtusa Polaris. Accenture and Persistent Systems made the largest number of offers.

In PGPX, of the 91 students eligible for placement, 12 did not seek placement through the institute while one was company sponsored or already employed. Of the total 79 who sought placement through the institute, 12 remained unplaced. The total number of offers accepted was 67.

In function-wise job offers, the maximum 26 was in System/IT followed by 16 in General Management and 11 in Operations/Supply Chain.

In MEP, the Median was Rs 28,00,000 and Mean 28,48,538. Sector-wise, maximum MEP was in Information Technology (IT) at Rs 43,03,177 (Median Rs 28,83,000 and Mean Rs 29,86,126). Consumer goods (FMCG) comes next with MEP of Rs38,00,000 (Median Rs 28,00,000, Mean Rs 31,33,333).

Function-wise, the MEP is maximum in Consulting at Rs 43,03,177 (Median 36,60,000) followed by System/IT at Rs 42,07,524 (Median Rs 28,28,000, Mean Rs 28,62,040).

For the PGP placements, more than 120 firms participated. Recruiters in the management and consulting domain included Citibank, Credit Suisse, Deutsche Bank, Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, Kotak IB and Standard Chartered. The BFSI recruiters included American Express, FinIQ, Fullerton and RBI. Sales & Marketing roles came from regular recruiters like Airtel, Asian Paints, HUL, ITC, Nestle, P&G and Reckitt Benckiser.

Amazon made the maximum number of 18 offers. McKinsey followed with 15 offers in the Consulting domain. Among global banks, Goldman Sachs picked up 9 students.

The 400 students eligible for placement included 370 PGP graduating in 2017, 12 PGP and dual degree students graduating in 2018. The 386 students who sought placement through the institute accepted an equal number of offers.

The maximum number of 103 students went into Consulting (domestic) followed by BFSI (Domestic 58, International 7), FMCG (domestic 53, international 3) and Conglomerates (domestic 41, international 7).

In domestic salary, the maximum MEP was Rs 53,00,000, median Rs 22,00,000 and mean Rs 22,57,815. MEP international was $127,275, median $65,351 and average $68,104.

“Putting in their heart & soul in the Amazon Ace Challenge 2018 and emerging as winners, Saurabh Mhatre, Raman Sharma and Dharmesh Shah of PGPX CO’18-19 made us all proud. We congratulate them on behalf of our entire IIMA community!” the post said.

Now in its 8^th edition, Amazon Customer Excellence (ACE) Challenge is held across two of Amazon’s business areas, namely, Operations and Consumer Business. The competition is open to full-time 2-year PGP and 1-year PGPX program students from a select list of B-Schools.

The final face-off, The Innovation Challenge was held in Bangalore on August 11 and 12. The PGPX team from IIMA, named WIMWIANS, won the challenge in Consumer Business

Teams were free to register and solve cases in one or both areas. Held in two phases, registration for the competition opened on July 6 and closed on July 10. The preliminary round titled the Ace Case Breakers was held on July 13 with the launch of Case Breakers on the ACE website. The deadline for submission of cases under both the Business Areas was on July 15.

The final face-off, The Innovation Challenge was held in Bangalore on August 11 and 12. The PGPX team from IIMA, named WIMWIANS, won the challenge in Consumer Business. The other finalists in the section were The Knights from IIM, Kozhikode, Swift from the Indian School of Business (ISB), The Sharks from

Faculty of Management Studies, Delhi (FMS) and Team Strategos from the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT).

The Ace Challenge is a battle on three fronts, namely, innovation, strategy and simplicity. It involves time-crunched problem-solving and live case-simulations culminating in a face-off between teams in the finale. The competition allows students to exercise lateral thinking, brainstorm and evaluate challenging case studies.

In Operations, IIM Shillong, IIM Ranchi, National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE), IIM Raipur and the Indian School of Business (ISB) are in the finals.

The batch, comprising 138 students, has an average GMAT score of around 700 and GRE score of 232. The average age is around 32 years and average total work experience of 8.9 years. The students have an average international experience of approximately two years.

The present cohort is not much different from the previous batch (2017-18) who too had an average GMAT score of around 700, around 32 years average age, about 8.5 years of average total work experience of 8.5 years and an average international experience of two years.

However, IIMA says, the present batch boast of more diversity in terms of work experience. The students have work experience in 19 industries, innumerable functional areas and 115 companies.

Female representation is 16.67% compared to 25% in the previous batch. The students, 17.39% of whom reside outside India are spread across 11 countries. International work experience is 54.35%. Here again, there was a drop from 57% in the 2017-18 batch.

In the previous batch, 25% were from disciplines other than engineering, They came with work experience in 18 industries and 102 companies. The batch had three international participants.

“Academic rigour and mental discipline would determine success in this programme,” PGPX Chairperson Professor Arindam Banerjee said addressing the incoming class.

The PGPX, launched in 2006, is aimed at experienced professionals to accelerate their career path and assume leadership roles. More than 1,000 students have graduated so far. Till 2016- 17, the intake was just 90 students. Last year, one more section was added.

“With the overwhelming response, we have continued the extra section and accordingly, 138 students have been admitted this year,” IIMA said.

The full time 1-year residential program, as per the Financial Times’ Global MBA Ranking 2018, is ranked 31st in the world.

IIMA has been ranked as number 1 Management institute in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) rankings of India’s Ministry of Human Resource Development.
