Types of IELTS

IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training are the two formats of the IELTS examination. These two formats serve different purposes. The main focus of the IELTS examination is to provide a valid and accurate assessment of the four language skills namely reading, writing, listening and speaking.

IELTS Exam Prep Tips

  • Reading: This section consists of three passages in the order of increasing difficulty levels. There are a total of 40 questions and this section includes a variety of questions that tests the reading skills of the candidate.
  • Writing: This section has two tasks.

In Task 1, the candidates are required to write an essay in response to a point of view, argument or problem.

In Task 2, the candidates are required to interpret a diagram in their own words. 

  • Listening: In this section, candidates have to listen to four recorded texts, monologues, and conversations by a range of native speakers, and answer a series of questions based on the recordings.
  • Speaking: In this section, the speaking ability is assessed on the basis of one-to-one interaction between the candidate and the examiner.
