IELTS Results: Everything You Want To Know

Results for the IELTS 2020 paper conducted in online mode on January 4 have been announced by British Council at ielts.britishcouncil.org. The candidates can also access their test results from the test centers. To check the IELTS result online, candidates can log in on the test taker portal by entering their test dates, date of birth, identification document number and candidate number.

The results for IELTS are usually released around 12 noon on the thirteenth day from the test day. For the candidates, who appeared in the online test, the result is declared within 5-7 days. The hard copy for IELTS 2020 result in the form of a Test Report Form (TRF) is sent via mail delivery within ten days for offline test and 5-7 days for online test. IELTS results are not entertained over phone or email.

For any queries regarding the test results, candidates can reach out to their test centers. The results are available for only a period of 28 days from the date of release of the result.

How To Check IELTS Results?

Candidates can access their IELTS exam results through four ways- online, offline at the test center, via SMS or email. Following are the steps to check results:

Online IELTS Results By British Council

Candidates can check their IELTS Results online by following the given steps:

  • Step 1: Go to the British Council official website – @ ielts.britishcouncil.org
  • Step 2: Choose the ‘Results’ link
  • Step 3: Select the test date.
  • Step 4: After entering the date of birth, identification document number and candidate number and click on the find button.
  • Step 5: Your result will be displayed on the screen.

How to get IELTS Results from the test center?

Candidates can also check their IELTS results 2020 from their test center. In order to check their IELTS Test scores at the test center

  • You need to produce your ID number or passport used at the time of registration.
  • Candidates will be receiving their candidate number on the test day and are required to ensure that they keep it safe.
  • Results of IELTS 2020  will not be available over the phone, or by email or fax to candidates who have done the arrangements to pick it up in person from the test center

IELTS Results through SMS

Steps to get IELTS results through SMS are:

  • Step 1: Candidates have to send the following code from any mobile number to 9289892898 after 12 pm (IST) to check their IELTS results 2020 on the result day.
  • Step 2: The format for the same is- RESULT<space>Candidate No. <Space>Passport No.
  • Step 3: Scores will be automatically sent to their preferred universities or organizations which they chose at the time of registration for IELTS 2020.

IELTS Results through Mail

Candidates will be notified via an email containing their results by the council on the announcement of results. Candidates are advised to keep a check on their mail Id regularly.

How to Calculate IELTS Scores?

The steps given below will help in calculating IELTS Result 2020 scores:

Step 1: Overall band score is calculated by taking the mean of the four individual scores, i.e., listening, speaking, reading and writing.

Step 2: Keeping in consideration the nearest half or whole band the reporting of IELTS Band scores 2020 is done.

Example: (I)

  • If a candidate’s average across the four skills ends in .25, it is approximated to the next half.
  • If a candidate’s average ends in .75, then it is rounded up to the following whole band.
  • Therefore, a candidate who secures 6.5 for Reading, 6.5 for Listening, 7.0 for Speaking and 5.0 for Writing would be awarded an Overall Band Score of 6.5 (25/4 = 6.25 = Band 6.5) in IELTS result 2020.

Example: (II)

  • Likewise, in the IELTS 2020 result a candidate achieving 4.0 for Listening, 3.5 for Reading, 4.0 for Writing and 4.0 for Speaking would be awarded an Overall Band Score of 4.0 (15.5/4 =3.875= Band 4.0).

Example: (III)

  • On the other hand, a candidate achieving 6.5 for Listening, 6.5 for Reading, 5.5 for Writing and 6.0 for Speaking would be awarded band 6.0 (24.5/4 = 6.125 = Band 6) in the IELTS result 2020.

TEST REPORT FORM (TRF)

The Test Report Form details about the candidate’s overall performance i.e., overall band score and also a bifurcated score of each of the four skills, reading, listening, writing and speaking.

The mean of the four components is taken as the overall band score, after rounding up to the nearest whole or half. Each component is provided with equal weightage.

There are two types of Test Report Forms available:

  • Personal Test Report Form
  • Institutional Test Report Form

Personal Test Report Form

These test report forms will be received by candidates individually. The test report form contains both overall band score and score for each of the four skills i.e., listening, reading, speaking and writing. It is advised to candidates to keep their reports safe as only one copy is provided to each candidate. The TRF is sent by mail delivery with a shipment time of at least 10 days. Candidates are sent the shipment number to track the delivery of the TRF..

Test Report Forms for Institutions

The institutions listed by the candidate while registering for the IELTS exam will receive the copies of TRF. The TRFs are sent to these colleges/universities at no extra cost. However, the candidates are required to request for additional TRFs from the test center which issues the TRF. Candidates are provided with the option to opt for additional TRFs to be sent to colleges/universities anytime during the two-year validity period of the IELTS score.

Following are the modes for transmission of IELTS results-

  • International courier – To avail this service, candidates have to pay INR 1250 per address. On average, it takes 4 days for the company to deliver the TRF and aspirants can track it through shipment number using SMS.
  • By post –For postal service, a fee of INR 250 per address is charged. The TRF is normally delivered within two weeks via Air Mail.
  • Electronic –Fees for Electronic service id INR 250. However, it is important that the university to which the result is being sent has a subscription of the service to download scores online.

The TRF Verification service for IELTS enables institutions to access the scores of candidates. To use this option, they would require the TRF number which is present on the report. A candidate can re-evaluate the IELTS result by placing an inquiry at the test center with 6 weeks of the test date. The inquiry fees are fully refundable if any alterations in the band score are found.

How to Send IELTS scores to Universities?

Candidates can send soft copies of their IELTS test results directly to five universities of their choice, at no cost. Candidates have to choose their preferred university while registering for IELTS.

Step 1: While registering for the test, after the candidate has filled in all personal details and have chosen their test date and test center, they are given an option to choose if they want to send their scores to other universities.

Step 2: On selecting ‘YES’ as the answer, they are required to fill in the details of the institution.

Step 3: The IELTS test centers send a copy of the Test Report Form (TRF) to the chosen universities.

Step 4: Candidates can also opt to send in the hard copies of their TRF to preferred institutions at an additional cost of USD 3.75.

Step 5: Candidates can pay an extra charge of USD 19 to send the TRF via international courier and they can even attach their TRFs with the university applications. 

Re-taking IELTS Exam

There is a limit to the number of times a candidate can appear for the IELTS exam. A candidate can appear for the test again if he/she is not satisfied with his/her score. The selection procedure on the basis of IELTS score varies from university to university.
