The ‘India Rankings 2016’ , released by National Bureau of Accreditation (NBA) for institutions of higher learning, has the IIMs putting up a good show, occupying the first six ranks with the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB) topping the list. IIMB’s achievement is all the more creditable as it also stood first in five of the six criteria that led to the overall rankings.

Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore (IIMB) has topped the overall rankings with a score of 93.04 among management institutions in the ‘India Rankings’ 2016, the first government-backed rankings for higher education launched by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD) on April 4.

The second rank went to IIM, Ahmedabad (89.91) followed by IIM, Calcutta (87.45), IIM, Lucknow (86.12), IIM Udaipur (84.22) and IIM, Kozhikode (81.97) in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth ranks respectively. International Management Institute (IMI), New Delhi on the seventh spot was the only private sector business school to figure in the top ten ranks. At the eighth place was the Bhopal-based Indian Institute of Forest Management, IIT Kanpur in the ninth and IIM, Indore holding the tenth rank.

The ranking was based on five criteria — teaching and learning resources (TLR), graduation outcome (GO), perception (PR), outreach & inclusivity (OI) and research productivity . All institutions were judged based on self-disclosure of information.

In TLR rankings, IIMB got a score of 96.18 followed by IIT, Kanpur (93.89) in the second spot with IIM, Ahmedabad (90.20) being relegated to fourth rank. Indian Institute of Forest Management was in the third rank having scored 91.25.

In the rankings by GO, Management Development Institute, Gurgaon stood first with a score of 98.59, followed by IIMB (90.10), IIMA (89.73). SP Jain Institute was in the fourth spot with a score of 89.73.

In RPC, IIMB topped with a score of (94.05) followed by IIMC (93.38), IIT, Kanpur (92.42) and IIMA in the fourth rank at 91.35.

In ranking by PR, IIMA was ranked first with a score of 99, followed by MDI, Gurgaon (97), IIML (96), IIM, Indore (96) with IIMB in the fifth rank with a score of 95.

In ranking by OI, IIMB topped at 86.61 followed by Vellore Institute of Technology 86.04, Lingayas University, Faridabad 84.29 and IIMA 80.63.

India Rankings 2016 is the first exercise to rank the higher educational institutions in the country based on objective, identifiable parameters, Union Minister for Human Resource Development Smriti Zubin Irani said at the release of the rankings in New Delhi on April 4, 2016. The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) was launched by her on September 29, 2015.

These rankings would also help in reaching benchmark of international excellence. It would help students make informed choices about the institutions they want to join, the Minister said.

 

Academic institutes have been assessed on several parameters, including teaching-learning; research; collaborative practice and professional performance; graduate outcomes; placements; outreach and inclusive action and peer group perception. Each of these has been further subdivided into nearly 20 sub criteria to comprehensively assess an institution.
